Maximum amount of stem cells transplanted into humans?

Do you know how much were the maximum amount of stem or progenitor cells, ever been successfully transplanted into mammals and specially into a human being in toto or in terms of grafted cells/total cells ratio ?

  1. Lizfrog: you are talking about 2 billion cells, how did you guess that? The biggest amount of cells I transplanted myself on rodents were 9 million cells grafted in 1.5 million portion for six weeks. Let’s refine the question: I am curious about the maximum amount of cells transplanted into one mammal during its all lifetime. A slightly different, but as important question is: what is the maximum number added at one time?

  2. This study show you what you’re looking for: Outcomes among 562 recipients of placental-blood transplants from unrelated donors, Rubinstein P, Carrier C, Scaradavoul, N Engl J Med, 339:1565–1577, 1998

They dosed at a rate of between 25 and >100 million total nucleated cells per kg body mass. This study used recipients of various ages and does not specifically show body mass. For every 100 lbs (45 kg) body mass, that would be the equivalent of between 1.1 and 4.5 x 10^9 TNC transplanted. This appears to have been done as a single dose and some patients are noted to have received more than one transplant over the course of the study.

I read elsewhere that although there is not yet a “standard” for dosing, most of the available data suggests there is a threshold effect somewhere within the range of between 1.5 and 2.5 x 10^7 total nucleated cells per kilogram body mass. 3. Maybe 1 million cells, but I’m not sure as it may also depend on the zone of the body or the organ wich required the cell transplantation, for example it could be more than 1 million for hepatic cells as I read somewhere something between 5 million and 600 million hepatic cell transplant realised.
Are you going to tell us :)?
